$250K Grant To EDF To Help To Prevent Orphaned Wells

We are excited to announce a large grant of $250K to EDF (Environmental Defense Fund). These funds will be focused on helping end orphan wells in the United States. Through this partnership, EDF is working to help states create new policies to prevent wells from becoming orphaned in the first place.

Orphan wells are oil and gas wells that do not have an owner and have not been plugged. This is a huge problem for climate change, as over time these abandoned wells can leak methane in large quantities. Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas, with over 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years. The goal is for new policies to be put in place that makes sure all wells are plugged at the end of their useful life, so that they can never become orphaned.

By establishing better policies regulating wells at the end of their lives, not only will less methane leak into the atmosphere, benefiting the environment, but the government will save enormous amounts of money (in the billions of dollars) because they will no longer be on the hook to plug these wells themselves down the line. Additionally, timely plugging of these wells protects nearby residents from explosion risk, prevents air toxics releases, avoids groundwater and surface water contamination, and raises local property values, all while generating well-paying jobs.

We are incredibly happy to be working with EDF to help tackle this very important issue.
